The completion of the Standard Chartered (SC) 21km marked the last run of the year for me. For the year 2009, my maiden run was the Adidas Sundown Women’s 10km. The ambitious I signed up for the Great Eastern (GE) 10km & 21km, making it a total of 3 runs in a year. But I never looked back.

The Adidas Sundown was the first run I attempted alone as 2 of my friends withdrew from it due to injuries. Never had I once wanted to withdraw because of that. This was perhaps the run I had put in the most efforts in, training religiously with my male friends every Wednesday. It would have been a complete waste not to go for it. This was the first lesson that taught me to be courageous and highlighted my strength of having the determination to finish a project regardless of any difficulties or change of plans.

Adidas Sundown Women’s 10km – 30th May 2009

As for the Great Eastern 10km and Standard Chartered 21km, I was less zealous because of work and church commitments. It was actually impossible to fix regular training sessions. More friends joined in and the profile of the 8 of us split into 2 distinct groups, the hardworking and lazy lots. Well, I belonged to the latter. Fortunately; my personal timing for the last 2 runs was still quite consistent and I finished GE with the same timing as the Sundown and SC in 2hrs 40mins. Though the results were not as good as my friends, I am not complaining as they reflected the efforts I had put in.

Us @ the start of the SC 21km – 6th Dec 2009

(Do pardon the low resolution, they were taken via my mobile)

We made it!

Running has been a great contributing factor to my personal growth and the better understanding of myself for the past 1 year. I am filled with satisfaction whenever I look at my achievements; ‘trophies’ in the form of running gear and medals from each race. They act as constant reminders and encouragement of each milestone I had accomplished. The feeling of satisfaction is simply indescribable, bringing fresh hope to my life and giving me the ‘Oomph’ (extra strength) to face each new day.

My ‘Trophies’ for Year 2009

(Clockwise: Adidas Sundown, SC & GE)

I am really excited and thankful for coming a long way. The ‘me’ one year ago was too ladylike (fragile), limiting myself in areas of achievement and overstaying in my comfort zone. Runs stretch not only our physical limits, but mental limits and horizons of personal experiences as well. To receive loads of positive comments and adorations from strangers and friends actually brought me to the next level of self-confidence. I am loving my current self, the new Janie= bliss!

The registration for the 2010 Adidas Sundown is open and my friends and I may be joining. Do leave a comment if you are interested to join too. We might bump into each other and enjoy the journey of having greater health together. Cheers! xoxo

Of late, I have been battling with a bout of stress-related illness alone. I’ve not dealt with any panic-attacks since last June, but it came back when I embarked on my trackies back to the workforce recently. I paused and I thought, is it worth it?

Somehow, the smile on our daughter’s face melts all concerns away. She is the reason for all our slogging because we are bent on giving her a good start in life. Like most young parents, both the husband and I hold visions of how we want our future to be like…a business of our own, investments that will reap profits, rental from properties that will generate passive income..and ultimately, the goal of financial freedom in the next 5 years time.

Now What?

The question is, how do we strike a balance between our work, family, without upsetting our health?

The only thing I’ve learnt to cope with my stress level is to “go with the flow”, stay upbeat, and not let mental diarrhoea ruin my life. Having said that, exercise plays an important part in our daily live too.

So What to Do?

My husband and I are trying to improve our eating and lifestyle habits.

So we are eating very well – lots of vegetables, fruits, limiting processed carbohydrates and high-cholesterol meats, sugar and fats. We’re including more exercise into our daily routine. For example, my coke-lover husband cut down on his rice intake and fatty food due to his high cholesterol after being advised by his cardiologist, and I am joining him in this undertaking to motivate him.

Dr Baldev Singh encouraged him to take periodical 20-minutes of brisk walking to slim down apart from his weekly bowling sessions with his boys. At times, like any dutiful wife, I’ll wait for the husband to return home after a day’s work and we’ll walk our baby in a pram by the ocean.

Playtime with Kimmi has also since become more physically challenging because she is older now and is more receptive to explorative activities like swimming(our fav!), commando-style crawling(we crawl with her!), play catching games with her gliding in the baby wagon, clearing up after messy, sprawling toys and dishing up nutritious puree recipes. Parenting is very much like running a small business. It can be very tiring and challenging actually.

I’m also researching on fuss- free tips on slimming down specifically for mums, and my massage therapist taught me to “suck/tuck in” the tummy to encourage skin tightening/firming around the excess bulge and the tummy will become smaller and firmer over time. Must be disciplined in this though, because you will definitely forget.

Sometimes when I get too caught up with the mundane stuffs, I tend to forget and let my tummy hung out “loosely”. But hey! I SUCK it in once I remember and do it for the longest time for the entire day before the day ends.

Tips from the older generation:

You probably would have heard this before…

Wearing a girdle or corset also helps in making the tummy smaller over a period of time. I bought my girdles from well-known and trusted brands like Wacoal and Triumph but gave up because I find them hard to wear due to the numerous amounts of hooks! I am really impatient with the hooking on regimen.

However, there are also many magnetic slim belts in the market and I especially like the permeable magnetic belt from OSIM. It wears like a breeze because of the stick-on Velcro, and it is suitable for post-natal slimming.

An important tip from the confinement lady, remember to suck in your tummy before strapping the belt on and it works like a normal girdle cept’ it is WAY more comfortable, and you don’t wear this underneath your clothing. I like it because it is stretchable, allowing me to adjust the tension (tightness) for my tummy, unlike the rigidity I get from my girdles. The micro magnet also stimulates blood circulation, a benefit confirmed by modern science. I bought mine here, and delivery is free!

There are still many things to do with our growing baby, and I am so excited! We can’t wait to bring her on her first overseas trip and the zoo soon! We still like to be pro-active in our parenting endeavour, and we are definitely working towards shrinking that expanding waistline (for my hubby), because, I love him, and I want him to be healthy.

1 more day to the Standard Chartered (SC) run and I’m feeling jittery about it. My friends have been running (a lot) more regularly than me and this week, they are going to ‘carbo-load’. In layman’s term, this simply means taking in more carbohydrates such as noodles and rice in order to store energy for the actual run.

However, for me, this is a huge struggle as I am in the midst of reducing hunger pangs and keeping carbohydrate intake to the minimum. As slight desirable results are starting to show, I am not willing to let them go to waste! Thus I have decided to ‘carbo load’ just 1 night before and prior to that, increase my usage of the uKimono.

Well, I may seem downright obsessed about having a flat tummy and it’s true! I reckon sculpted abs would be splendid too! Can I also share that my uKimono is overworked?

Being vain or rather a good steward of our body, health & beauty are justified actions towards the blessings that God has given. And it doesn’t matter if you are female or male, young or old, rich or poor. We tend to make more effort to look presentable. For sure, I can’t concentrate if I sit facing the mirror, as I will unconsciously steal glances at myself, neaten my hair, examine if I had put on weight on my face while talking to my friend(s). Don’t laugh as I am sure everyone will be guilty of that.

And why is my uKimono overworked? Because in my family, there are 3 girls, my mum, younger sister and myself and all 3 of us happen to fall under the above category of being an over-zeal steward! And since the uKimono targets to breakdown fats on our tummy, thighs & butt area, we are recommended to strap on it for 10mins per area and 3 times daily.

So go do the math.

In my last article, I wrote about lots of food and no exercises during my holiday, except shopping, shopping, and more shopping.

I must have lost my mind. How could I forget about the “exercises” I did as immediate as touching down at 1am that rainy night?

Hey! No! Not what you dirty-minded people are thinking! I was referring to household chores!

Since flying days, I’ve been quite a clean freak at my rented home. I have this idea that all dust would settle during my 10-day absence. Therefore, the moment I touch base, I would embark on 6-8 hours of non-stop cleaning and packing. Can you all imagine how it is like now that I have my own home?

As I think back, I realise that when we live with our parents, we would never have a sense of ownership. At the back of our minds, we know that even if we don’t lift a finger, our loving mothers will pick up the scraps for us. Moving out means we are relieved of constant nagging while gaining freedom, but by being independent and living on your own, you are really on your own- with the dirty toilets and laundry etc.

My housekeeping schedule includes changing to crisp sheets, scrubbing toilets, doing the laundry in 3 batches (black, white, and coloured), mopping the floor (never with a mop, always with a piece of cloth, mom says it’s cleaner and reaches all corners that way), washing the huge heavy rugs by hand (one part-time cleaning auntie wanted to put it in the washing machine. That was the last time I saw her), ironing all the clean clothes and making sure they all hang according to the classification and colour group in the wardrobe, and making sure the huge mirror in my living room is so clean, that someone could walk into it.

Somehow, there is never-ending packing. I would bring out all my clothes, fold and refold until it looks like a boutique’s walk-in wardrobe. My storeroom is my greatest enemy. I constantly have to arrange the 20+ pair of heels (taking pictures of new family members, and pasting it on the box for easy identification), putting aside the unused Christmas gifts from last year, unwanted garments, and much more rubbish I couldn’t recall. Throwing them away seems like a uprooting a raintree.

*My Shoes!!! My Love… Which of you working woman don’t like shoes?*

Last but not least, car wash. Not too bad on this part. It’s just a tiny baby. For the 1st few years, no one is even allowed to caress her! But as time passes by, I allowed her to say occasional “Hi” to strangers. No machine allowed though, only tender touches.

Shouldn’t all these take 6-8 hours already? Can anyone calculate the calories I’ve burnt on a single occasion? (I need more motivation!) This “very fun activity” actually happens twice a month. J

Hey working ladies out there! Have you ever felt a lack of accomplishment and job satisfaction at some point of time in your life? Do you live on your own? Try this exercise! I guarantee you would feel as if you’ve conquered Mount Everest. Best of all, it is a great way to work out! I’m killing two birds with a stone. Don’t you think?

A check with my ex-housemates, who now have their own homes, indicates unanimous satisfaction when chores are completed. Anyone else feel the same way? Or are we the strange species of birds flocking together?

After I started showing off my ability to eat and yet not gain fat, it’s time I punish and slap myself. I did not heed Mom’s teachings: “Never say never”. Sigh…

A visit to mom last week prompted her to comment on my little bulge. The problem with Moms, they never complain when we put on weight. They are all too delighted to see a kg or two on our tiny figures. In fact in their eyes, chubby is good. I nearly fainted and gave all sorts of explanations like: I just ate a lot, indigestion, her wild imagination etc. I was just kidding myself. I did pile on a little. L

The suggestion of gym membership pops up in my mind again. Should I? Findings indicate that most working executives sign up at the gym because they need to keep fit, de-stress, lose weight, and work towards better health. Most important of all, they need the personal trainer to push & keep them disciplined, so as to ensure they achieve their goals.

I decided to tag along when my girlfriend (the gym addict mentioned in my previous article) went for her routine session. She took me through 2 cardio machine, 4 sets of sit ups and leg lifts, and 2 weight machines for working the thighs and butt. By the time she proceeded to dumbbells and another 10 sets of exercises, I was already surrendering and sitting on the floor watching the various in-house television programs. I’m convinced that I am totally unfit.

But with so much household chores and fun activities going on, do I really need to waste more money on signing up for the gym membership (about $600 a year)? Would I have the time? It may just be a white elephant sitting in my purse.

Final answer, NO. I can always start with jogging, sit-ups and leg lifts at home. I don’t think I want to sacrifice my precious TV serials and my machine therapy at the comfort of my home.

Besides, I can always fall back on this baby.

“We were written in the stars, my love, all that
separated us, was time, the time it took to read the
map which was placed within our hearts, to find our
way back to one another”

My husband wrote me alot of poems and love letters during our courtship days when he was doing his degree in Brisbane. He has a romantic soul and I think it was one of the reasons why I hung on during those 2 years he was overseas. He never fails to call me every night, and would scrimp and save in the material and food arena in order to supplement the $600 yish of phone bills monthly. My hubby isn’t rich, and neither does he takes his businessman dad for granted by asking him for more money.

Our long distance relationship had been an eventful one; I was still flying while he’s pretty much an insecure boy staying in a rented apartment at down under. At 24, I have a fair share of passengers who would asked me out, and the perks of being an air crew, you get countless job offers because people are too happy at showing you their name cards especially on sectors like China and long-haul flights. Male passengers are interested with the persona and what goes beyond, and beneath that airline uniform. I have to add though, that they are mostly nice and genuine business personnel (CEOs, MDs) who craved for a little attention and forming new friendship with docile looking girls in mid-air.

To disappoint you abit, the little devil in me was tempted, and I did went out with one, or two men who managed to capture my soul and swept me off my feet. You know, they are the sort of financially independent businessman, or the son of some rich magnate, the kind whom I could envisage myself marrying them to become an instant taitai. A taitai who ferries her brood of four in a stylo-mylo Land Rover.

I am not materialistic; it just happened that the kinds of men who transcend through my life are mostly quite well-to-do. They are also more mature and wiser because of the age gap and most importantly, they talked intelligently which I find intriguing. Money doesn’t buy you everything but it sure can set you up for some happiness, don’t you agree?

I have known of girls who became the mistress of some rich businessmen/tycoons so they can afford to buy all the Chopards, bling blings, bags and Shooes… pretty much all-the-pretty-things that they like, literally. Most girls like me end up marrying the commoner – Men who make us think twice before laying our hands on designer pieces that would probably cost them their entire month salary.

Then, there’s the other group, women who are stuck in vicious cycles of sustaining the lifestyle of their little gigolos, feeding their egos and secretly hope that their beloved men will grow up to take care of them one day. Such sad thoughts indeed.

I feel that the purpose of life is to be happy and you don’t have to find happiness because it always finds you. The reality is we have all been brain-washed by the society to stay competitive and be in constant pursuit of the material stuffs in order to feed our bottomless-pit ego.

At the end of the day, there will always be someone who earns more than you. If you remove the outer layers of our physical form, we all look pretty much the same, like shit, if you can phantom that thought in your mind.

Anyhow… through a leap of faith, I married my primary school classmate after 2 years of LDR, 4 years of courtship and 2 proposals later.

First proposal in 2006, hubby was a poor student studying at down-under…still, he got me my first solitaire with his savings..which I apparently lost later ;p

Our wedding in June, 2008

We got married in the presence of 800 guests, with local and overseas folks who shared our joy and happiness.

Do Bear and I quarrel? Of course we do! We have our grim moments as all humans do, but I also learned that the trick to take things slow and easy. Anger is the greatest enemy during an argument. You often say things which you didn’t mean and regret deeply thereafter.

For me, I feel that our quarrels strengthen our relationship and bind us together. I like things hot and spicy ;p Communication irons out all elaborate webs of problems and makes life easier. The worst case scenario is when both parties refused to talk about a long-standing issue and allow deceitful mind games to gain the upper hand. Most of my friends would share that money is the number one culprit which causes divorce. And indeed, new statistics shows that men are most likely to divorce a woman who is not working, and has no income at all.

Most woman refuse to divorce their cheating husband because of the financial status in life. See article here. I adhere firmly for women to earn their own money, and whilst most financial gurus would advise us to have some savings which should last for 6 months in the event of unemployment, unwell pregnancies which requires a lot of rest, or unforeseen circumstances.

I suggest, try to have some savings that should last you up to 3 years, comfortably, even without working. For example, if your take home pay is $2000 every month, try to have $70,000 in your saving accounts keeping in mind that it’ll be depleted in no time if you have a certain lifestyle to maintain.

Having said these, I’ll like to share the three golden words I abide to, in making all relationships work:-

Acceptance

Tolerance

Respect.

How about you? What binds you and your spouse together?

My ankles and calves ache so badly and they weigh tons now even as I am writing this – literally the sore results after a mock run of the partial 21km Standard Chartered route on Thursday. And to think that my friends and I (8 of us) ran only about 15km, starting from the open stage at Esplanade to Fort Road and then back. Wish a couple of OSIM uSqueez Warm were available nearby after the run to give those over-worked calves a good massage.

Since it was the eve of the public holiday, quite a number of us made it for the training and yes, most of us do not own a gym membership except for this one. This run happened to be the most dramatic one as I got lost from the group and did not have my mobile phone with me.

There was no way of communication and the feeling of being detached from the group was not good at all, trust me. Thank God that Singapore is relatively safe, even in the night. But one can never be too complacent.

While curbing the wrong thoughts that I was ‘ditched’ by my friends, I had to coax myself to stop being a whiny baby and that my friends do care and would be frantically looking for me.

This was one of the moments to practice placing trust in friends; the many situations to analyze when the unexpected arise like the above; the opportunities to build strong friendship and having team spirit are some of the traits and lessons I learnt through training with friends and joining runs/ marathons. The support and running tips from friends are priceless as well. One should eat 1.5 hours before a run to prevent stitches and proper warm up exercise goes a long, long way.

When I run alone, I am more independent as many times, it is very crucial to be able to discipline your mind, to always think like a winner and to push and stretch the limits. As a bonus, I get to enjoy the beautiful landscape of Singapore, be it day or night ,when I map my own routes at no cost!

I love especially how the breeze and at times, the cold wind sets my adrenaline high, pushing me to run further and faster. It is always great to have generous friends. One of them gave me the Nike I-pod pacer that helps to track my miles while listening to my favorite hits from Lady Gaga, Akon and Korean boy band, Super Junior.

Sidetrack: Does the hilarious scene of hamsters running on the wheels come to your mind seeing runners working on the gym track mills?

Somehow, the thought of perspiring in an air-conditioned room does not work for me. It seems like a series of confusion for my body, as one part will be sending signals that I am burning fats by perspiring while the other tries to stem perspiration due to the cold temperate. Contradicting isn’t it?

Well, maybe it’s just a psychological play on my thoughts.

Oh, to gear us up for the upcoming (and my first ever !) 21km on 6th December, some of my friends and I joined the 10km Great Eastern Run early this month. This is motivation in phase one.

Will share more in my next post.

Some of us before the run

Some of us after the run

And what our bibs say:

We are ‘Freaking Orhsome’ (Woohoo!)

The runs not only train my mental health but also my physical body. I have shed a few kilos and my friends actually commented that I am healthier because I seldom fall sick nowadays and slimmer because not much angling has to be done while being photographed. Yay! Such comforting news. I am bearing in mind still, of having Gisele Bundchen’s hot body!

Time to ditch the lazy monster in me and strap on my Cherry, Cheery Ukimono! Please make way for the next ‘Gisele Bundchen’, haha.

As I’m writing, I’m killing my brain cells trying to pen my thoughts about working out and keeping fit. Santa wouldn’t have given me any pressies coz I’ve been naughty and not been doing the necessary for the past 3 weeks. It all seemed so long ago since I last did any decent activities I can call exercise. Or does frenzy shopping count?

I was away for 2 weeks to New York, Seattle and San Francisco. Frankly, I would rather walk my way onboard as a stewardess than to be planted on the passenger seat doing nothing but eat, drink and sleep. 4 meal services in 20 hours, not forgetting snacking on chips, nuts and sandwiches in between! Mentally, I think I have piled on 10kg ( I would usually feel guilty only with food that is not in my “craving menu”) For the rest of the time on American soil, can you imagine the daily American breakfast, huge Seafood Platter lunch, and thick steak for dinner?

* Yummy American Breakfast: Eggs and toast with bacon and corn beef hash. Are you hungry yet?*

Look on the bright side, I assure myself (As I type “bright side”, my brain screams “sunny side up”!). The best way to get around in New York is to walk round the blocks. In this way, I’ll get to see and shop more. That’s brisk walking isn’t it? Well, I need to walk at a fast pace so as not to lose precious time… Furthermore, with the 7 degrees weather, my body needs more food to keep warm. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

To all the frequent travelers out there, how many of you actually made space in your luggage for a pair of trainers, telling yourself to make time for the FOC hotel gymnasium? I did that many times during my flying days, but the success rate of seeing the fully equipped room is 50%. I don’t know why. Gymnasium just doesn’t work for me. Zero motivation. It’s even more impossible now that I need to pay for it, drive up and down for an hour of torture, and be watched over by the trainer! I’ll probably fight with him/her.

I hate to be supervised.

Like most Asian girls, I have a small but not proportionate frame. I have a heavier lower half. If 32-24-32 is the ideal hourglass figure, then I must be a pear. So, I do lots of jogging, roller blading, and cycling (hey! This one works on the abs too!), mostly working out from waist down. I’ve never lifted any weights.

Boy, I was so wrong. Or so it seems. Recently, I read that we shouldn’t be loading on cardio and sculpting activities that work us from waist down in hope that we can trim the butt and thighs. The more we work solely on these areas, these will develop into muscles and may over time, be overdeveloped. For best results and a more proportionate look, we should be targeting all of our muscle groups. Oh my God! What have I been doing??

Oh, did I mention on one occasion, I so badly wanted to slim down my thunder thighs; I even went to a doctor for those slimming injections on targeted area! After a few sessions, the doctor had to tell me it’s not working. This is because I’ve acquired more muscles than cellulite over time… I can no longer kill those muscles developed during adolescence by sprinting my way to be a champion at every sports day. I’ll have to live with it.

Now, my advice to you ladies out there, get involved in activities moderately. Don’t just concentrate on one exercise to trim a single area. Be an all rounder to tone different set of muscles. Do something different every day in a week if possible. Remember to inject some fun into it!

Let’s see. If I have to plan for my week, I wish I have time to do all of the followings:

Monday: Golf

Tuesday: Cycling/Roller-Blading

Wednesday: Yoga/Kick-Boxing/MuayThai

Thursday: Badminton

Friday: Dancing (Salsa, Quick Steps, Jive, Rock ‘n’ Roll) TGIF, Party the night away!

Saturday: Wake-Boarding/ Horse Riding

Sunday: OFF DAY!! J

If only we can stay close to our planned activities… Face it, there’ll be days when we will find ourselves excuses like: tired from work, work and more work, need to spend time with love ones, too stressed to do anything, etc and etc. I’ll say, stay indoors! We can always use products to make up for loss of outdoor exercise!

*my possessions to ease those aches from stilettos, sooth tired eyes, and out go those fats!*

Apart from the many OSIM products I already own, I’m dreaming of an uGallop, the one that works on the entire body. How nice if I can gallop my way, imagine riding in the plantations of Malaysia, right in the comfort of my own home! Bliss…

Another way not to pile on extra pounds during non exercise days, try to eat lighter, cut down sugar intake, and up intake of citrus fruits, apples and low fat yoghurt. Soluble fibre pushes out the waste in us which cause us to bloat. Always try to have an early and light dinner, not that I can proudly announce I’m doing it. And slow slow slow! Savor every bite and enjoy your food for better digestion.

I have scheduled a horse riding session on 3rd December with an old classmate, a friend of 18 years. I’m so excited. It’s been a long while since my entire body ached from riding. Anyone interested? If not for this round, I can keep you in mind for the next one. Just drop me a comment with your email addy!

See ya! J
